Would you want to store over 2.5 years worth of TV shows? If so, would you be willing to pay US$5,000 to do so? TiVo, the popular US PVR company is betting the answer is yes with their just announced “TiVo Mega” system.
Equipped with 24 terabytes of memory – enough for 24,000 hours of standard definition television (2.7 years of programming), or you prefer to record in high-definition, 4000 hours (roughly five months of programming).
TiVo says that while the capacity is very large, one of the most common complaints they receive is that customers have to delete old programs to clear space for new recordings.
“People hate being forced to delete cool stuff from their DVR before they want to, or finding a TV show they had recorded is now gone,” TiVo’s US marketing chief Ira Bahr said.
The TiVo Mega was being showcased this week at the Cedia Expo market in Denver, Colorado. It is expected to be released commercially in the first quarter of 2015.
